Melbourne

Despite the immense pleasures of the City of Melbourne itself, there are plenty of reasons to leave and explore the surrounding countryside. One such, en route to the delightful Marysville in the Yarra Valley, is the Domaine Chandon vineyard and restaurant. Sparkling wine without the ‘C’ word, served in a fantastic glass atrium overlooking the vineyards, or at tables outside. Delicious food is optional!

Even better to arrive in an open topped car – just make sure you’re not the designated driver!

18 Apr 2008 - The best wine in the world?
In a part of France where it is hard to avoid wine (why would you want to?), let me share with you my favourite wine secret – Châteaux Cordellain Bages. The wine list contains many of the best, (including some of the most expensive) bottles of the world – most of them originating from within 15 miles of the Chateau.

The place sets itself apart from other local gourmand establishments – funky in design, cool music, and amazing food. And it has a luxury hotel attached so that you can sleep it all off afterwards.

If available try the hare with dark chocolate lattice, or the fillet steak smoked with vine branches.

18 Apr 2008 - Hungary for Wine?
Budapest

If you want to experience the best that Hungary has to offer in terms of wine and food, then put yourself in the capable hands of Bock – expert winemakers, and great chefs. If you have plenty of time, go visit them at their vineyard, 3 or 4 hours south of Budapest. If your visit is more limited, then pop to the Bock Bistro in central Budapest.

Hungarian wine is at its best when eaten with Hungarian food. Order some rich, gamey meat – perhaps boar or venison, and drink it with a heavy Cabernet France. A perfect combination!

An innovative way to choose your wine for dinner
Five minutes in a taxi from the heart of the City takes you to one of the most intriguing wine/ food combinations that we have found in Europe. Upstairs, Cadulf’s wine loft is a great open space, with a buzzy, energetic vibe. Grab a table, or stay at the long bar to eat or drink.

Downstairs you enter a different world – a wine cellar to take your breath away! With a sommelier to guide you if you need, choose your preferred wine to accompany your evening back upstairs.

Be adventurous and try a Swiss wine – some of the white is fantastic!
